When I read your comment, Prudence, and saw the word ‘addiction’ I wasn’t know what type of addiction you were facing. As a former counselor, I thought of one method that might help. Try to ask appropriate questions that would identify the truth about an addiction. Creative people use the “five Ws”, those are words that are found at the beginning of questions to dig up the truth and discover solutions. The Ws are: What? Why? When? Who? Where? and sometimes a How? They help to solve a problem.
When an answer comes forth from a ‘W’ question, keep it in mind, maybe write it down, and allow it to help you understand the reason you have an attraction for an addiction; why it is a problem and what would work as a positive attraction that would work as an alternative for the addiction. Perhaps, finding a purpose in life that would attract your attention.

When a procedure is chosen to replace the addiction, the hearing of our voice expressing a verbal statement of the decision is helpful because your subconscious mind will hear you state your conviction and it will choose to have its quiet resources support that decision as a good alternative to the addiction.
Each of us responds to the two, almost magical, verbal expressions of ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ which enable us to relate to other people who can help us.
In your verbal statement, those magical words help also. They are the powerful parts of prayer. They stabilize our quest for what we have and what we need, if we use them frequently.
